Edmund Kean was possibly the greatest English speaking actor ever. His Drury Lane debut as Shylock caused the sort of sensation and instant stardom that had never been known before. Kean was one of the first superstars, his fame and talent making him an instant hit even in America. But Kean was to fall from favour in as spectacular fashion. In his final moments, Kean looks back on his career; his talent, his rivals, his wife and children, his affairs and he considers the fickle nature of celebrity and fame. And he re-lives his most famous roles with some of Shakespeare’s most famous and powerful speeches.
